Q. What is oral sedation?
A. Oral sedation is achieved by taking pills that makes you relax, relieve anxiety and may cause drowsiness. As the medication needs to be digested to be absorbed, it takes around an hour for the effect to be felt. This is an easy and simple method however, the depth and duration of sedation does very from one person to the next. This is usually used for simpler procedure of shorter duration. Alternately, IV sedation works within minutes.
Q. What is IV sedation?
A. IV sedation is when the medication is given by a line through your vein in the hand. As the medication can be absorbed immediately, the drug takes effect within a few minutes. The doses of the medication can be adjusted according to the clinical situation. If the procedure takes longer, more medication can be given. IV sedation is preferred during long procedures.
